Alice cares strongly about the environment and the climate change issues, and the 24th of May marked the second Global Climate Strike. Using the platform of the global event, Alice and me (Veronica) organized a small demonstration in Portimão, a city on the coastline of Portugal and therefore strongly impacted by climate changes and pollution, especially caused by people on the beaches.

Therefore, we went to two of the main beaches in Portimão, Praia da Rocha and Praia do Vau, with signs to raise awareness on climate change, pictures of animals killed or deformed by plastic pollution and plastic bottles’ caps. With the caps, we wrote HELP on the beach and we waited there, looking at the reaction of people. We were holding signs saying “Vote for climate” and “European Elections – 26th May 2019".

After some chants (“What do we want?” “Climate justice!” “When do we want it?” “Now!”) around the beach to attract the attention of tourists and locals, we headed back home, happy to have sent out a message.

Generally speaking, people were surprised of our presence, but they were not approaching us. The thing that just two of us were there caused shame and shyness, an interesting reaction about which we talked a lot, since we were not expecting it.
